Kingston, March 5, 2010 - This year marks the sixty-first (61) anniversary of the founding of the Commonwealth of Nations, formerly the British Commonwealth. Jamaica is part of this fifty-four (54) member group of countries whose main objective is to support member states as they work towards democracy and development.

The Commonwealth Youth Ambassadors Programme of Jamaica has once again seen the relevance of commemorating the founding of the Commonwealth and facilitating the expansion of knowledge of the Commonwealth and its programme. This year, the focus is on "Youth, Science and Technology".

The week of March 7-12, 2010 will involve a variety of activities aimed at reinforcing the important and relevant relationship between Youth and Science and Technology. The Commonwealth week of activities are as follows:

• Sunday March 7, 2010 - Church Service at the St. Andrew Parish Church, Half Way Tree, Kingston 10 at 8am


• Monday March 8, 2010 - Youth Explosion at the Mavis Bank Comprehensive High School, Rural St. Andrew between 9am and 3:30pm


• Wednesday 10, 2010 - Youth Forum, 'Youth in action, technology the fashion' at the Central High School in Clarendon 9am - 2pm

Kamal Powell, Jamaica's Youth Ambassador to the Commonwealth and Chair of the Commonwealth Caribbean Youth Caucus said "young people need to increase their awareness of Science and Technology and use the knowledge gained to advance their development through entrepreneurship, innovation and healthy lifestyle".

The Commonwealth Youth Ambassadors Programme is a project of the National Centre for Youth Development, a division of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sports.
