The Hon. Burchell Whiteman
Minister of Information &
Leader of Government Business


Burchell Whiteman commanded respect across the board from leaders of Jamaica's educational institutions and was often hailed by many for his deft role as Minster of Education, Youth and Culture. 

Mr. Whiteman ably served as Education Minister for ten consecutive years, having assumed the position in 1992.  A decade later, he was recently assigned the position of Minister of Information and Leader of Government Business in the Senate.

A former teacher, Minister Whiteman, has accumulated 30 years of service in the academic field.

After graduating from Munro College, Mr. Whiteman completed tertiary studies at the University College of the West Indies where he earned a Bachelor Degree in English and French and furthered his studies at England's Birmingham University, attaining a Masters Degree in Education and a Diploma in Education.

The Minister is also a past principal of the Brown's Town Community College and York Castle High School. He is a member of a number of school-affiliated Boards, including the Issa Scholarship Selection Committee and the Overseas Examination Committee.

Married and the father of two daughters, Mr. Whiteman is an avid fan of cricket, gardening, reading and music.
