Hon. Donald Buchanan Minister of Information and Development Hon. Donald Buchanan, a formally trained Trade Unionist and stalwart politician has given over 40 years of uncompromising service to his country in different capacities in Government. Minister Buchanan hails from Little Park, St. Elizabeth. A past student of Excelsior High, he pursued a career as a Trade Unionist with the National Workers Union for 11 years. Mr. Buchanan's unwavering commitment towards improved employee conditions had helped to influence his decision to study Trade Unionism which has played a significant role in his life. Given his strong background in Trade Unionism, Mr. Buchanan was appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Labour, Welfare and Sports in 1989 and served for two years in that capacity. During the same period he was also appointed the Leader of the Jamaica Delegation to the International Labour Organization (I.L.O). Mr. Buchanan has also been exposed to different facets of Government, ranging from the Minister of State in the Ministry of Local Government, Youth and Community Development, Ministry of Public Service, and Ministry of Finance and Planning. In February 2000 Minister Buchanan was promoted to the position of Minister of Labour and Social Security, a portfolio which he held for two years before he was invited by Prime Minister, the Most Hon. P.J. Patterson to take on new responsibility as Minister for Water and Housing, following the resignation of his predecessor, Dr. Karl Blythe. Donald Buchanan is married and is the father of four sons and two daughters.He enjoys cricket, reading, walking, discussions and watching sporting events. |
