The Cable and Wireless Jamaica Foundation (CWJF), in support of the government's E-learning project, today donated Personal Internet Communications (PIC), to 17 schools across the island.

The PIC, also known as a 'Max', provides internet connectivity at high speed to allow for the surfing of the internet and the sending and receiving of e-mail.

The systems come complete and ready to use with pre-installed software from Microsoft, including Internet browser, e-mail, instant messaging, media player, and spreadsheet and word processing capabilities, and facilitate plug-in hardware such as printers and speakers.

Each Max unit comes fully equipped with a monitor, keyboard and mouse, ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) modem or Ethernet connector.

Manager of CWJF, Ann Astwood, in her address at the presentation ceremony held at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort in Montego Bay, said that a chief mandate of her organization was the promotion of E-education.

She said the 17 beneficiary schools were chosen from a list of institutions, which participated in the CWJF-sponsored Childnet International conference, held recently in Montego Bay and which focused on Internet use among children.

While not disclosing the total value of the PIC systems, Mrs. Astwood informed that last year, her organization made contributions in cash and kind valued at between $20 million and $30 million to educational institutions and community groups across the island.

"The Ministry of Education (Youth and Culture) is onboard with us in terms of our focus on E-education. They are very happy to see what we are doing", she stated.

She said that the Ministry of Commerce, Science and Technology had also expressed pleasure at the foundation's efforts to provide young people with access to the Internet and in becoming as technologically savvy as their counterparts in first world countries.
