School Contractors Beware

The Ministry of Education and Youth is warning contractors who have failed to meet their contractual obligations under the post hurricane Ivan school rehabilitation project, to take steps to have these projects completed as soon as possible, or face the consequence of losing these contracts.
Director of Project Management and Technical Services at the Ministry, Lauriston Wilson, told JIS News that of the 293 schools, which were placed under the rehabilitation project, only 280 have been completed.
He noted that more schools should have been finished, but this has not materialized, as some of the contractors have failed to complete their work.
In this regard, he said that the Ministry would be reviewing the contracts of those persons who have not been adhering to the terms of their agreements.
"To date we have completed 280 [schools]. and we will review [the process].and if the contractors have failed to meet their contractual obligations, we may terminate the contract and get somebody else to finish it, or if the work is almost at the point of completion, we may decide to proceed with him [the contractor], but by the 30th of September, we will be taking definitive action because that programme has to come to an end," Mr. Wilson stressed.
The post hurricane Ivan school rehabilitation project is funded by the Education Transformation Project at a cost of $929 million. Rehabilitation works include repairs to sanitary and water facilities and general repairs to buildings.
