Minister of Water and Housing, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, pushes the doors to enter the University of Technology's (UTech) Faculty of Business and Management in Montego Bay, St. James, after cutting the ribbon. The facility, located on Kent Avenue, was officially opened on Friday (July 10).

The University of Technology (UTech) has expanded its outreach in western Jamaica, officially opening its Faculty of Business and Management in Montego Bay on Friday July 10.

The facility, located at 2 Kent Avenue, will offer a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in business administration, hospitality and tourism management, computer and information technology, pharmacy, and architectural studies; and a range of continuing education programmes, professional and short courses.

Minister of Water and Housing, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, who delivered the main address at the opening, commended UTech on its efforts to offer access to tertiary education to a wide cross section of people.

He said that Jamaicans must have access to quality education to enable the country to achieve sustainable economic development, and survive the current "economic tailspin".

"We will continue to struggle as a third world country, aspiring and appearing to have the potential to develop ... but we cannot achieve such potential unless we educate our people," Dr. Chang stated.

"We have to find a way to ... tap into the creative resources of our people and that means offering quality education," he added.

He noted that UTech has demonstrated the capacity to apply education to practical solutions, and lauded the institution's athletic programme, including the MVP Club, which has produced world leading athletes.

Dr. Chang, who is Member of Parliament for North West St. James, welcomed UTech to the parish.

"I pledge on behalf of the parish of St. James and the entire western region, our fullest support in your endeavours. We look forward to you expanding your role in Trelawny and in the entire western region," he stated.

UTech President, Professor Errol Morrison, in his remarks, said that the institution was pleased to be launching the Faculty of Business and Management in Montego Bay.

"On behalf of the UTech community, we want to say how pleased we are to be able to open up, in this more significant way, in Montego Bay, and look forward to growing exponentially," he said.

Stating that UTech is "the people's university," he informed that the plan was "to take UTech to every parish if necessary."

Already, UTech operates a nursing school in Montego Bay and, in May, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Tourism to establish a Hospitality School in the second city, which will train managers and supervisors for the hotel industry.

The university is also proposing to lease the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium in Falmouth and to transform it into a first-class academic and sporting facility. It is estimated that the project will cost $1.2 billion over a six-year period.
