Jamalco Assists Senior Citizen With Housing

Jamalco has come to the aid of a 73 year-old farmer, Hervine Lord of Mount Oliphant, Manchester, whose house was destroyed by Hurricane Dean in August last year.
On Labour Day (May 23), members of the Jamalco Community Council and persons in the community began constructing a two-bed room house for the senior citizen. It is slated to be completed at the end of June.
Public and Community Relations Administrator at the company, Pamela White told JIS News, that providing assistance to Mr. Lord was consistent with the National Labour Day theme: 'Eat What We Grow. Grow What We Eat'.
"Over the years, Mr. Lord was a cultivator of sweet cassava, yellow yam and sweet potato. He now confines his farming to yam, and for him to devote his time and energy to food production, we thought it best to restore his house. The residents of the community who are volunteering their time and skills, our contractors who put up funds and materials for the construction, must all be commended for their kind gesture towards this farmer," Mrs. White said.
Speaking on behalf of her father, Jodi-Ann Lord said the help for Mr. Lord could not have come at a better time, as she was about to put off her entry to nursing school and use the money to erect a smaller structure for him.
"We are appreciative to Jamalco and the community for the help that they are giving to our father. The last hurricane completely wrecked the house and it was difficult for us to come up with the money to build him a new one. Without this help, life would have been miserable for all of us," Ms. Lord said.
The cost of construction will be just over $300,000. The company spent over $1 million on Labour Day projects in Clarendon and Manchester.
