Jamaica's High Commissioner to London, Maxine Roberts, has lauded the Jamaica Manchester Society for its work over the years to assist nationals at home and abroad.

High Commissioner Roberts, who was speaking at the organization's 40th anniversary celebrations recently, said the Society's leaders and members, "reflected all that is good and positive about Jamaica".

"To survive for 40 years is always a testament to the dedication, hard work and foresight of the people who make up the organization. Your dedication to Jamaicans in the United Kingdom (UK) and in Jamaica is unquestionable. The Society has served as an inspiration for hundreds of young people, many of whom you honour with your Young Achievers Awards," she said.

"I am here to tell you that you in Manchester have made the Government and the High Commission very proud," she stated.

The High Commissioner noted that it was appropriate that the Society's 40th anniversary celebrations took place in the same month that Jamaica honoured its national heroes and outstanding sons and daughters, and the UK recognised the worth and achievements of black people though its Black History Month activities.

She noted that, "Jamaicans continue to be loyal, hard working citizens of this country and such celebrations should call attention to the contributions made by Jamaicans to British society".

"This can only serve as a reminder, not just to the black community but also to the wider British community, that much of the economic and social progress achieved by this country came from the sweat and unpaid labour of our forefathers during the days of slavery," she stated.
