Jamaicans in Atlanta Plan Week of Activities to Mark Independence

The Jamaican community in Atlanta will mark Jamaica's 42nd anniversary of Independence this year with a weeklong series of activities.
The events, which are being planned by The Union of Jamaica Organizations in Atlanta (UJOA), will commence on Sunday, August 1 with a thanksgiving service at the Hillside Presbyterian Church commencing at 4:30 p.m. The sermon will be delivered by Rev. Oliver Daley, pastor of the Ridgemount United Church in Mandeville.
At the function, the Prime Minister's message will be read by Vin Martin Esquire, Jamaica's Honorary Consul in Atlanta. The first lesson will be read by Chairman of the Atlanta Jamaican Association, Derrick Wright and the second lesson by 13-year old Gabrielle Scott, representing the younger generation of Jamaicans living in Atlanta. The service will be moderated by Rev. Dr. Winston Lawson, pastor of Hillside Presbyterian Church. He will be assisted by Rev. Dr. Noel Erskine, Associate Professor of Theology at Emory University, the Rev. Easton V. Brooks, pastor of the Revival Time Church of God and the Rev. Barry Davis, who will coordinate the music for the evening. Jamaica's songbird Dawn-Marie will present a special musical rendition. A reception will follow after the church service.
On Wednesday, August 4, a public health forum will be held at the Auburn Avenue Library, downtown Atlanta, beginning at 6:00 p.m. The forum will address the various health issues affecting Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. Panelists will include a number of top health officials from the Caribbean, who reside in Atlanta.
On Independence Day Friday, August 6, the annual variety concert will take place at the Columbia Middle School beginning at 6:00 p.m. The concert will feature a number of cultural performances with special guest Monty Montgomery and his band. Master of ceremonies will be former Miss World Lisa Hanna, who now resides in Atlanta.
On Saturday, August 7, the Atlanta Jamaican Association will host its annual Independence and Emancipation Ball at the Georgia International Convention Centre. This black tie affair will commence at 7:00 p.m. and will have as its guest speaker, radio talk show host Ronnie Thwaites. Music will be supplied by the Fabulous Five Band.
On Sunday, August 8, the annual Family Fun Day will be held at Columbia Middle School grounds in Decatur, Georgia. The event will feature numerous sports, entertainment and other leisure events.
On Monday, August 9, Ronnie Thwaites will host his show 'Independent Talk' from the office of the Honorary Consul in Atlanta, from 5:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
