The Jamaican Diaspora United Kingdom has congratulated Member of Parliament for South West St Andrew, Portia Simpson-Miller on her victory in the People's National Party leadership election.

"The Jamaican Diaspora UK congratulates the Hon. Portia Simpson-Miller, MP on her success in the leadership election as the fourth president of the People's National Party. The Diaspora welcomes her and assures her of our wholehearted support as she prepares to take the mantle of the seventh and first female Prime Minister of Jamaica, land we love," the group said in a statement.

The UK Diaspora group is one of several UK-based bodies that have offered congratulations to Mrs. Simpson-Miller.

The UK Diaspora group was officially launched in June 2005 and was born of the mandate of the first Jamaica Diaspora Conference, held in Kingston in 2004. It is comprised of six regional groups from across the United Kingdom and will hold the first UK conference on April 1, 2006.
