A large selection of Jamaican art will be on display in Miami this weekend, when some 35 artists will exhibit more than 100 pieces at the Out of the Blue Café in the Wynwood Art District.
The two-day exhibition and sale, from Friday (Nov. 9) to Saturday (Nov. 10), will run simultaneously with the Miami International Book Festival, where the literary work of a number of Jamaicans will also be highlighted.
Featured will be a diverse selection of themes using a variety of media including textiles and canvasses, wood carvings, paintings, recycled glass and metals, and photographs and sculptures.
While the first overseas show for some of the artists, others such as Judy MacMillan and Kacey Ferguson, will continue to gain international exposure. Both were part of a month-long exhibition in October at the Dharma Studio in Coconut Grove, which was a tribute to former Jamaican artist, Colin Garland, who died earlier this year.
Part proceeds from the art show, which is organized by the Jamaican-based company Island Art and Framing and Florida-based art connoisseurs Joanne Jacobson and Deborah Abrahams, will benefit victims of Hurricane Dean.
According to Ms. Jacobson, this is another tremendous opportunity to promote Jamaican art and culture. She said that each artist has a unique way of making and presenting his work, which collectively demonstrate aspects of the island's rich culture and heritage.
