The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete will be touring the Amity Hall Project and the Bodles Research Station in St. Catherine on the first day of a three-day state visit to Jamaica (Nov 23-26.)
The Amity Hall Project, a 25-hectare Experimental Rice Farm scheme, is being developed in collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Jamaica Broilers Group to satisfy the country's rice consumption. The Bodles Research Station operates four agricultural programmes using modern technology to increase production and productivity.
Other engagements by the Tanzanian President and First Lady of Tanzania, Salma Kikwete, will include meetings with tourism officials and tours of some of the top attractions in St. Ann. President Kikwete is also expected to unveil the statue of Olympian, Herb Mckenley at the National Stadium. The President will address Parliament next Wednesday (Nov 25), meet with PM Golding, pay several courtesy calls, be hosted by the Governor General at a state dinner and tour Liberty Hall which honours the legacy of National Hero Marcus Garvey.
Lady Salma Kikwete accompanied by Mrs. Lorna Golding, wife of Prime Minister Golding, will visit the Hope Valley Experimental School, one of the few schools in the island that caters to the educational development of disabled and able-bodied children. They will also be touring the National Gallery and the Bob Marley Museum.
The visit by the Tanzanian government officials is an offshoot of one earlier this year to Jamaica by Tanzania's Minister of Water and Irrigation and other officials of that East African Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority.
The Tanzanian officials will depart Jamaica on November 26 for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, November 27-29. Prime Minister, Bruce Golding will be leading Jamaica's delegation to the Trinidad meeting for discussions which will focus on gobal, political and economic developments and conduct a strategic overview of the Commonwealth's work in support of the interests of member countries.
