Scores of young people in Port Maria, St. Mary, participated in a clean up exercise of the Pagee Beach in that town on Saturday, February 28.

The clean-up, which commenced at 8:00 a.m. was spearheaded by the Pagee Youth Organisation for Sustainable Development, in conjunction with Food for the Poor, Fishing Village-Pagee, and Friends of Pagee.

The project was conducted as part of a community beautification exercise, which began in January of this year.

Speaking to JIS News during the event, President of the Pagee Youth for Sustainable Development Organisation, Sean Hylton said he was pleased to be associated with the initiative and commended the participants for the contribution made to the effort.

He said the organisation has adopted a part of the Pagee Beach, and has assumed full responsibility for keeping it clean and attractive, adding that members have been working closely with other entities in St. Mary, to assist it to achieve it's objective of keeping the Pagee area clean and attractive.

Observing that valuable assistance was provided by the St. Mary Chamber of Commerce, and the National Solid Waste Management Authority, in conducting the clean up exercise, Mr. Hylton said the garbage gathered from the beach included plastic bags, bottles, abandoned items, and various other types of debris.

Noting that the Pagee Youth for Sustainable Development will also be engaging in a tree planting exercise to beautify the beach as a follow up to the clean up project, Mr. Hylton said the organisation will be making a special effort to ensure that the area is kept clean on a daily basis, and not just for the immediate period following the day's activities.

Four garbage drums donated by the Parish Council for garbage collection have already been placed at strategic locations in the Pagee area.
