CARICOM Heads Meet in Jamaica Today for Symbolic Signing of CSM Agreement
KINGSTON, Jan. 29 (JIS):
CARICOM Heads of Government will converge in Jamaica today (Jan. 30) for the symbolic signing of the Single Market aspect of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

The historic ceremony will be held on the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies, which is one of the earliest symbols of regional integration. CARICOM Secretary General, Dr. Edwin Carrington, will oversee the function, which will be carried live via television across the region.
CSM will Widen Employment, Trade and Business Opportunities

With the advent of the Caribbean Single Market (CSM) on January 1, opportunities have been presented for additional jobs for Jamaicans, a widening of the job market with more choices, opportunities to travel to other Caribbean countries for employment, as well as to expand businesses and create new ones.
CSM will Transform Region-CARICOM Secretary General

The formal launch of the CARICOM Single Market will take place on Monday January 30, 2006, at the University of the West Indies, Mona campus, signaling a new beginning for CARICOM countries as the region seeks to create a shared market space to secure its survival within the global sphere.

CSM’s Free Movement Clause will not Affect Health Sector - Junor
KINGSTON, Jan. 19 (JIS):
Health Minister John Junor has assured, that the free movement of skilled persons throughout the region, will not impact negatively on the local health sector.

Under the free movement clause of the CARICOM Single Market (CSM), skilled persons are entitled to move and work freely throughout the region. Persons eligible include university graduates, media practitioners, artistes, musicians, sportspersons, managers, technical and supervisory staff attached to a company or a self-employed person.

Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Patrick Manning assumed the Chairmanship of Caricom on January 1, 2006. This would mean, the Prime Minister said, he will be in greater contact with his Caribbean colleagues and will travel more within the region.

Patterson signs legal instrument to bring the Caricom Single Market into being

Jamaica became the 8th Caricom country to sign the Agreement to establish the Caricom Single Market which is to take effect on January 1, 2006. Prime Minister the Most Hon. P. J. Patterson signed the legal instrument this morning (December 30, 2005) at his residence on Shortwood Road in Kingston, Jamaica.

CARICOM Newest Trade Bloc on January 23

Come January 23, 2006 the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) becomes the newest trade bloc, joining the approximately 194 other trade blocs in the fight to ensure market survival.

These trade blocs enjoy special and differential treatment amongst themselves, in addition to the removal of trade barriers within the bloc and also have a common trade tariff for third countries.
