A novel of the Kendal crash, 'Reaper of Souls', written by Beverley East, is now available in the United States of America, England and Canada.

The book was launched in Jamaica on September 1 last year, which marked the 50th anniversary of the crash.

The Kendal Crash, which took place on September 1, 1957, near Kendal, Manchester, was the worst rail disaster in Jamaica's history and the second worst rail disaster in the world at that time. The crash claimed the lives of more than 250 persons, 14 of whom were members of Ms. East's family.

In an interview with JIS News, Ms. East said she had great expectations for the novel. "'Reaper of Souls' has been an incredible personal journey for me - both writing and researching this story. I feel like I have finally put to rest the spirits of both my grandparents and other members of my family. I want this milestone in our history never to be forgotten. We should continue to celebrate those who survived that night - over 50 years ago. I would eventually like to see this book in every classroom, both in Jamaica and across the world," she said.

Ms. East, a master graphologist, is a leading authority on handwriting and is a founding member of the Association of Qualified Graphologists. She was the media consultant in the 2001 'Anthrax letters' attack in the United States. She also writes a career column, 'Writefully Yours' for the Voice in the United Kingdom (UK) and The Sunday Gleaner in Jamaica.

The author read excerpts from her book on February 24 at a meeting of the Jamaican Nationals Association (JNA) of Washington, D.C.
