Sister to Sister Mediathon Receives Pledges so far for just Over Nine Million Dollars

Pledges for more than nine million have been received so far by The Sister to Sister Mediathon, a fundraiser held on Sunday, 13th April 2008, to assist the Women's Centre of Jamaica Foundation as well as to help with the finances for shelters being built by the Bureau for Women's Affairs for battered women.
The targeted figure is 10 million dollars.
The mediathon, sponsored by the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports (MICYS) and held at the studios of Creative Production &Training Centre Limited (CPTC), saw performances by several women from the entertainment arena and communications media.
Minister Olivia "Babsy" Grange, who was present throughout the mediathon, gave interviews as well as joined in along with some of the celebrities in taking pledges on the telephones.
The donations were greatly aided by contributions from companies such as Grace Kennedy which pledged one million dollars. Mr. Anthony Abrahams, head of NewsTalk FM 93 pledged one million dollars in advertising and $500,000.00 in cash. Entertainers including artistes, producers and music labels also contributed heavily. Among them: Record Producer Don Corleon, $250,000.00; Chris Smith, Artist Manager, $150,000.00 with artistes Alaine, Carol Gonzales; and Shaggy giving $100,000.00 each.
Additional pledges will be accepted at Paymaster Outlets Island wide as well as by money transfer from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom through Jamaica National Money Transfer.
