Gov't Committed to Building a Self-Reliant Nation

Prime Minister, Bruce Golding, has pledged the Government's commitment in fostering the growth of a self-reliant nation, noting that all Jamaicans have a part to play in this process.
In his message delivered by Deputy Mayor of Clarendon, Forette Stewart, at the Labour Day Service of the Clarendon Parish Council held yesterday (May 18) in the parish, Mr. Golding noted that the "current crisis on the global scene has had a negative rippling effect on small countries such as ours, with our food security being seriously compromised."
He said that each Jamaican must cooperate in assisting to stem the crisis. "The theme for this Labour Day is a deliberate focus aimed at mitigating the food crisis that faces us. This Government is committed to answering that call, and is asking all Jamaicans to do the same," he stated.
The theme for National Labour Day: 'Eat what you grow, grow what you eat,' echoes the urgings of the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Christopher Tufton, that Jamaicans grow and consume more local produce.
In his address, Mayor Milton Brown said the initiative was timely. "This country is indeed a blessed land. All we need to feed ourselves is to add labour to the land," he stated.
He further remarked that it is "our business to take care of the poor" and for that reason, the Clarendon Parish Council will be cultivating the lands of the infirmary as the parish Labour Day project.
The Council also plans to break ground for a farm at the Mineral Heights Primary School. The project will address the needs of both the school and the wider community.
