40 Projects Registered for Labour Day in St. Mary

Forty projects have so far been registered with the St. Mary Labour Day Committee for Labour Day work in the parish on Friday, May 23.
Speaking with JIS News, Coordinator of the St. Mary Labour Day Committee, Jeanette Rose-Bryan, said most of the projects registered are agriculture related, giving practical expression to the national Labour Day theme 'Eat what we grow: grow what we eat'.
Included in those projects is the St. Mary parish project, which will involve the planting of fruit trees and the establishment of a vegetable garden at the St. Mary Infirmary in Port Maria, as well as the general cleaning up and beautification of the compound of that institution.
Mrs. Rose-Bryan said the establishment of vegetable gardens and the planting of fruit trees will also constitute the major part of most of the projects to be embarked on in the communities which have so far registered activities with the St. Mary Labour Day Committee. These communities include Port Maria, Islington, Boscobel, Retreat, Carron Hall, and Jeffery Town.
Noting that the Social Development Commission is currently in the process of distributing fruit seedlings to community groups and individuals who will be participating in the day's activities, she said she was confident that more projects will be registered in the parish as additional communities join in the effort to put work into Labour Day.
Noting that preliminary work has already begun on some projects to ensure that there is a smooth start on Labour Day, she said she was expecting a successful day of activities.
She said that the effort will continue after Labour Day, as the projects completed will be given the necessary support and maintenance needed thereafter, while those not finished on the day will be completed as soon as possible afterwards.
