Labour Day preparations have begun in Hanover and Westmoreland, with land clearance, ploughing, and cutting of drains taking place on the lots identified for the parish projects.
The Labour Day project for Hanover is the establishment of a new farm plot on the property of the Georgia 4-H Training Centre located in the district of Jericho, while in Westmoreland a similar plot will be established on the grounds of the Little London High School.
The parish projects are in keeping with the theme for Labour Day 2008: 'Eat what we grow . grow what we eat', which is aimed at highlighting the importance of food security for the nation, and promoting a national food planting effort within schools and communities.
According to Secretary/Manager of the Westmoreland Parish Council, Patricia Sinclair-Stair, the parish is being assisted by the Sugar Company of Jamaica with equipment for land preparation.
"Friday (Labour Day) is the actual planting day. We are going to plant 200 bananas, we are going to plant cash crops like sweet pepper, string bean, callaloo, cabbage and pak choi," she told JIS News.
She pointed out that community response towards the parish project has been very encouraging, and the Little London school community has expressed gratitude that the institution was selected.
She expressed the hope that approximately 100 persons will turn out to assist on the parish project, adding that to date, some 25 other projects have been registered within the parish, with expectations for that number to increase over the next few days.
In Hanover, Mayor of Lucea, Councillor Lloyd Hill, pointed out that preparatory work has also started on the parish project, with the work slated to continue up to Labour Day. Seedlings to be planted include: cassava, sweet potato, june plum, and ackee, among others.
There are approximately 33 registered projects within the parish of Hanover, and that number is also expected to increase by Labour Day.
