Director of Administration at the St. Ann Parish Council, Claudiah Carter is appealing to the residents to come out and support Labour Day activities in the parish.
"The theme for Labour Day this year is, 'Eat what we grow.Grow what we eat' and I must say that this is a welcomed theme, because we have been, for too long, relying on foreign products to subsidize for food in Jamaica. We have acquired the taste for foreign products and as a result of that, our food security has been depleted over the years," Miss Carter said.
Some 30 projects have been registered to date and the scope of work include the planting of trees, planting of seeds, painting of pedestrian crossings, bushing of sidewalks and the cleaning of tank sites, among others. The parish project is the expansion of the garden at the Aabuthnott Gallimore High School in Alexandria.
In terms of the parish project, she informed that the work would begin at 9:00 a.m.
Miss Carter told JIS News that the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) and the Social Development Commission (SDC) were carrying out their roles effectively in getting the various schools and Community Based Organisations prepared for work on Labour Day, Friday, May 23. She said that several persons have indicated their interest to participate in the various projects, adding that representatives from RADA would be present in St. Ann's Bay to give information on backyard gardening and how persons could make the best use of whatever small areas they have to grow their plants.
"By and large, I think the day will be very productive and eventually we will reap from the seeds we have sown," she said.
