Labour Ministry Opens Registration Centres Tomorrow

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security will as of tomorrow (Aug. 21) be opening registration centres across the island for persons affected by the passage of Hurricane Dean.
Speaking in an interview with JIS News, Marlene Miller, Disaster Manager at the Ministry, said that these centres will operate from all Seventh Day Adventist churches and Salvation Army centres across the island.
She informed that the registration centres will open at 9: 00 am and "persons (affected by the hurricane) are required to go to the centres and their information would be taken such as their names and address".
She added that the officers from the Ministry will take the necessary information from the affected persons and an assessment will follow thereafter.
"The assessment process is led by officers from the Ministry, Red Cross, Salvation Army and other non governmental organizations. They will do home visits and record the information which is then collated and assistance is given based on the information given," Miss Miller said.
She indicated that the assessment officers will distribute emergency items such as water, tin food, rice and detergent to needy persons.
Hurricane Dean, a category four system, passed south of Jamaica on Sunday (Aug.19). The storm is no longer a threat to the island.
