The two-day Canadian Overseas Employment job fair got underway on (Oct. 19) at 9 o'clock at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security's East Street Office.

The event is for persons interested in working in the construction industry in British Columbia, particularly welders, crane operators, pipe fitters and ironworkers, who were chosen during pre-selection interviews conducted on September 29 and October 2.

More than 1,300 applicants responded to the interviews and out of this number, persons were selected for the job fair.

Seven employers from British Columbia, Canada will be attending the fair, where they will make the final selection of workers.

While in the island, the employers will call on Prime Minister, Bruce Golding; Minister of Labour and Social Security, Pearnel Charles; and the Minister of Education, Andrew Holness.

Eleven (11) young construction workers left the island on September 17 for British Columbia, representing the first time in the history of the 30-year Overseas Employment Programme that workers were being sent to the Canadian province.

The programme will be expanded to include the recruitment of some 2,000 practical nurses also for British Columbia.
