As of Wednesday (Sept. 5), a total of 125 persons remained in shelters in several parishes across the island. According to Communications Officer at the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), Kerry-Ann Morris, St. Thomas has the highest number of persons in shelters with 42 persons in two facilities.

In addition, 29 persons are in one shelter in Portland; 26 persons in one shelter in St. Catherine; 20 persons in one shelter in Kingston and St. Andrew; seven persons are in four shelters in St. Elizabeth; while one shelter remains open in Manchester to accommodate one person.

Miss Morris told JIS News that four of the facilities being used as shelters are schools, but assured that these will be ready for the start of the new academic year, which starts on Monday, September 10. "They're (Parish Managers) are working towards having all of the schools empty and ready for the beginning of the school term," she said.

The schools affected are Yallahs and Grant's Pen Primary in St. Thomas; Manchioneal All-age in Portland; and Marley Hall All-age in Manchester.
