Residents of Pleasant Hill, St. Mary now have a community centre, which was built by the Social Development Commission (SDC) and residents at a cost of $4 million.

The centre, which was officially opened last week, will also serve a number of surrounding communities including Baxter's Mountain, Long Road, Fort George and Camberwell.

State Minister for Local Government and the Environment, Harry Douglas, who spoke at the function, said that the commissioning of the facility represented another step forward in the social development of St. Mary.

He said that in addition to being a venue for social functions, the facility will also serve as an educational and skills training centre offering courses in computer technology, home economics, among others.

Parish Manager for the St. Mary office of the SDC, Jeanett Rose-Bryan, said the operation of the community centre will improve the quality of life of residents and help to develop unity.

She exhorted the citizens to take charge of the facility, noting that effective community governance begins when every citizen sees himself as having a stake in the overall development of their area.
