Retired Basic School Principal Honoured
Retired Principal of the Spring Village Basic School in St. Catherine, Mavis Walters, has been honoured by the community for 44 years of dedicated service to Education, and for establishing the basic school.
At a special ceremony held at the Spring Village Training Centre on April 7, a citation was read in her honour by Luna Bailey, Justice of the Peace.
Mrs. Bailey said that the retired Principal recognized the importance of early childhood education as "the foundation in helping many young persons to achieve their full potential".
She noted that the basic school was the first one in the community to be recognized by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture.
Guest Speaker at the function, Reverend Barrington Lawrence, said
Miss Walters' life was one of service, which he described as "the mark of greatness".
He encouraged community members to serve by getting involved in Citizen's Associations and Service Clubs.
Miss Walters was presented with a plaque, a cash award and a gift basket.
