The Hanover Parish Council is putting plans in place to deal with persons and business establishments that improperly dispose of their garbage in the parish.
With concerns being raised about the issue at a recent parish council monthly meeting, the decision was taken to bring the matter to the attention of the Hanover Public Health Department and the Hanover Municipal Police personnel for closer scrutiny and action.
Councillor for the Lucea division, Easton Edwards, pointed out that the problem was even more pronounced in the town of Lucea, where piles of garbage could always be found in close proximity to several business places in the town.
He pointed out that the origin of the garbage was no mystery, adding that the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) must not be blamed for not clearing the garbage, when such indiscriminate disposal of commercial garbage took place.
It was further pointed out that a similar problem existed in other districts throughout the parish. "These people must be prosecuted," Councillor Edwards stressed, and called for more attention to be paid to this matter by the municipal police officers employed to the council.
Mayor of Lucea, and Chairman of the Council, Lloyd Hill, said the concerns should also be brought to the attention of the Public Health Department, as there were health issues involved, which they could properly identify and deal with them.
It was decided that arrangements should be made for the municipal police officers and the public health officers to collaborate in a concerted effort to rid the main towns and districts of the parish of the indiscriminate disposal of garbage by businesses and persons.
Mayor Hill insisted that the problem must be eradicated in short order, with some amount of continuity in terms of surveillance put in place, with a view to maintaining proper standards of garbage disposal throughout the parish.
