Minister of State responsible for Project Implementation in the Office of the Prime Minister, Daryl Vaz, has reassured beneficiaries of the Land Administration and Management Programme (LAMP), that their land titles can be used as collateral to improve their economic standing.

Mr. Vaz, who was guest speaker at a recent ceremony to present the titles, said that Government had realised that the greatest hindrance in the pace and progress of the programme, was the costly surveys and the prohibitive overall fees in the process of Titling.

Certificate of Titles were issued to beneficiaries under the Land Administration and Management Programme (LAMP), on Wednesday (Nov. 12). The ceremony, which marked the final phase for 2008, was held at the Shiloh Apostolic Church, West Prospect in St. Catherine.

The Minister noted that the key element of LAMP in St. Catherine was the Cadastral Mapping System undertaken by the Government, which in effect removes the need for surveys and allows landholders, to either avail themselves of the services under LAMP at their own pace, or make alternative arrangements to obtain their titles.

The programme, which began in 2000 was a pilot programme jointly funded by the Government of Jamaica and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The main objective of the programme is to assist the Government of Jamaica to establish a dynamic land market that will promote the efficient use of land.

Beneficiaries from areas in St. Catherine including Sligoville, West Prospect, Stanbury Grove, Rock Hall, James Mountain, Cedar Valley, Above Rocks and Riversdale, received Certificates of Title, as a part of the programme.
