Long distance runners and track and field enthusiasts are expected to descend on the community of Christiana, Manchester next month for the second annual Audley Shaw 10-kilometre road race.
The event, slated for December 13, is expected to attract athletes and spectators from the parish and across the island. The race will start at the cross roads in Spring Ground and end at Holmwood Technical High School.
At a recent press conference at Holmwood, Meet Director, Eddie Hector, informed that this year, a 5-kilometre race in honour of former Holmwood student athlete, Suzie Bent, and a fitness walk for senior citizens, have been added to the event.
He said that the entries have been encouraging so far, with students from school in Manchester, neighbouring parishes, and Kingston expected to participate. Seasoned long distance runners Shawn Pitter and Kirk Brown are also down to enter.
Meanwhile, Minister of Finance and the Public Service and Member of Parliament for North East Manchester, Hon. Audley Shaw, is urging wide support for the event, noting that it is a family affair.
"Last year was fairly successful. Our intension this year is to make it much more successful than last year and to have the involvement of more entries to the various competitions. We would like to encourage the general public to come out and watch the participants in the 5k and 10k races," Minister Shaw said.
The cost for the staging of the event, including prizes, is estimated at more that $1 million. The meet is being organized by the North East Manchester Sports Association (NEMSA).
