KINGSTON, July 1 (JIS):
The Sports Development Foundation (SDF) continues to fund critical sports infrastructure projects expending a total of $74.73 million during 2003, an increase of 188 per cent over the previous year.

Projects completed from this expenditure include the construction of multi-purpose courts, upgrading of football fields and cricket pitches, fencing of various sporting facilities, the construction and renovation of clubhouses and seating facilities and the provision of lighting for various play fields.

Minister of Local Government, Community Development and Sport, Portia Simpson-Miller gave an update on the work of the SDF during her presentation to the 2004/05 Sectoral Debate in Gordon House on Tuesday (June 29).

In terms of disbursement, the Foundation allocated $192.7 million in 2003, with G.C. Foster College, Insports and the Social Development Commission (SDC) receiving $29.8 million.

In the case of Insports, assistance was mainly geared towards school and community programmes of a developmental nature. Coaching seminars and competitions were facilitated in all 14 parishes.

The G.C. Foster College was provided with equipment and teaching aids as well as assistance for travel to sport meets, while SDC was assisted with the mobilisation of communities to participate in sporting activities.

The Fund also provided support to all active national sporting associations on a regular basis and also responded to numerous emergency situations.

Minister Simpson-Miller said that Sports continues to be a light around which the nation could proudly gather and that it was an agent of unity, detribalization and brought hope and feelings of accomplishment among Jamaicans.

“The crowds that continue to support the ‘Reggae Boyz’ demonstrate this potential. The excellent performances at the recently concluded National Athletics Trials reinforce the tremendous potential of sports to Jamaica. This potential is not only confined to the technical skills of the sport itself but in the economics of it. Sport is one of the biggest industries worldwide and represents an area that we can and must explore with more vigour in the future,” she stated.

The Minister also stated that sport was very critical to the process of community development and that during the next 12 months greater focus would be placed on the community sports infrastructure and the economic opportunities that could be derived from sports as an industry.

She cited the World Cup Cricket 2007, which she said could have tremendous transformative power for Kingston’s city redevelopment plans and community tourism development.

Minister Simpson-Miller said that her Ministry would continue to mainstream sports as an instrument of unity and national pride and expand the corporate partnerships to support sports development and pursue options to exploit new economic opportunities through sports.
