The
Integrated Drug Abuse Prevention Project has received $3 million as
set out in the 2004/05 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House
of Representatives.
The objective of the project is to strengthen drug abuse prevention
for Jamaican youth through an integrated approach involving community,
educational institutions and long-term peer groups.
Anticipated physical targets for the project this financial year include
formalizing and disbursing grant to 16 Community Action Development
Committees (CODACs).
Achievements to date include the formation of six active Community
Action Development Committee groups and the printing of posters, wall
charts, curriculum guides, booklets, activity books and comic books
to be used in schools and community prevention programmes.
This is in addition to the training of 14 young persons at risk in
hospitality management and three in cosmetology. Another 15 are being
trained in welding and eight others in information technology.
Funded by the European Development Fund (EDF), the project commenced
in December 1999 and is being implemented by the National Council
on Drug Abuse (NCDA).
