LABOUR DAY 2010

The focus of this year’s Labour Day will be on “Our children” – especially those that are vulnerable – with the slogan “Our Children…show them we Care.” Recognition of the workers of Jamaica will be maintained as part of the celebrations.

This period, dubbed “Workers’ Week,” will begin one week prior, culminating on Labour Day, celebrating workers for their contribution to nation-building. It will also target the general public on matters related to productivity, work ethics industrial relations, among others, as important elements of national development.

IThis year, Labour Day falls on Sunday, 23rd May, however, in keeping with regulations regarding the observance of Public Holidays, Labour Day will be observed on (Monday) May 24.

Labour Day seeks to foster and promote the Spirit of voluntarism within the nation. And this year people will be encouraged to demonstrate care and support for our children, by complementing the usual physical works with activities that target the mental and social development of children – mentoring, teaching and other forms of intervention.

Labour Day 2010 will have 14 national projects: twelve (12) Parishes and two (2) Municipalities – KSAC and Portmore. The National Planning Committee will work closely with government Agencies, including those that offer services to children, Parish councils, Parish committees and Members of parliament to identify and decide on the project of national focus for each parish.

This years’s activities include the official launch, Workers’ Week thanksgiving Services in each parish (May 16), Labour Day activities (May24) and the Labour Day Concert.

Given the limited resources available to fund projects this year partnerships at all levels will be critical to fulfilling the objectives of the 2010 programme.
