OCHO RIOS (JIS):

Minister of Transport and Works, Michael Henry, during a tour of Ocho Rios, following flood rains which severely affected the St. Ann town, and its environs.

The National Works Agency (NWA) continues to carry out restoration work in the resort town of Ocho Rios and surrounding communities that were severely affected by the recent flood rains.

"We have been able to re-open most of the major drains and we have a few minor ones that we are paying attention to," said Communications Manager at the NWA, Stephen Shaw.

He told JIS News that "we are also doing some additional work along Milford Road and we are also looking at getting additional material into the Fern Gully area to carry out additional restoration work on the corridor." He said that the work would continue for at least the end of the week.

In terms of parochial areas that were affected, Mr. Shaw said that work had already started in those areas in an effort to have those places cleaned up.

"We understand the concerns that are being raised by persons in the Parry Town area regarding the break away there. We started some work there last year with a view to correcting the situation that exists," he said.

"It is something that we have put back on the agenda for work for this fiscal year and we anticipate that it will be supported by the budget," he said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Shaw said that the NWA is doing its best to minimize the level of dust nuisance in Ocho Rios.

"We have been attempting to wash sections of the town with the aid of the fire hydrants there but there is a limitation, so we have moved to another plan, which is to get a truck to wet the road on an ongoing basis," he said.

He appealed to persons to co-operate with the NWA, as the agency works to achieve positive results in the area.
