In a bid to stem the growing number of motor vehicle accidents on the nation's roads, particularly in Clarendon, and the resulting injuries and fatalities, Jamalco recently staged a two-day defensive driving course for 10 taxi operators in the parish.

The exercise, which was conducted by Clarendon-based driving instructor, Alphonso Grennell, was staged at the Jamalco Employees Sports Club at Halse Hall. Over the two days, the operators were taken through the rudiments of proper usage of the roadway and attendant signage, and safeguarding themselves and pedestrians against accidents. They received certificates during a presentation ceremony at the Halse Hall Great House in Clarendon on August 7.

Administrative Manager at Jamalco, Sharon Brown underscored the responsibility, which she said the drivers had whenever they travelled on the road.

"It is an awesome responsibility that you have in transporting people; so part of your duty is to protect life. I urge you all to use the knowledge that you have gained during the training, to make a difference on the road," she implored.

In thanking Jamalco for hosting the course, President of the Vere Taxi Association, Fredrick Bryan, said it was important that the drivers refresh themselves regularly on driving techniques imparted to them.

"It is good that Jamalco has taken our careers into consideration and we thank them for the training in defensive driving (course),"Mr. Bryan said.

Supervision of the exercise was undertaken by the Environment, Health and Safety (EHS), and Training and Corporate Services Departments of Jamalco.
