Road Traffic and Safety
This programme is concerned with the planning, and development of an adequate, safe and efficient road network and transportation system for Jamaica, the provision of specialist services in the field of traffic and transportation engineering, and the administration of the Road Traffic Act. Its responsibilities relate to the planning and implementation of engineering projects, aimed at improving road safety and reducing traffic delays. This unit also conducts traffic surveys and studies, essential for the planning and designing of road and traffic management.
Traffic Engineering Branch
The Traffic Engineering Branch is charged with the responsibility of:

Collecting and analysing data in order to develop solutions to traffic problems |
2) |
Preparing geometric specifications and design standards, for highways in Jamaica |
3) |
Carrying out economic evaluations and feasibility studies on road projects |
4) |
Installing and maintaining traffic signals and signs |
The Metropolitan Management Transport Holdings Limited
The Metropolitan Management Transport Holdings (MMTH) Limited, was established with responsibility for putting in place the infrastructure necessary, to foster an improved transportation system, which includes:
a) |
The purchasing and owing of buses |
b) |
Wet leasing of buses to existing franchise holders |
c) |
Training of drivers and conductors |
d) |
Building depots to ensure proper maintenance of buses in the system |
e) |
Carrying out studies, the results of which will influence decisions that are guided by the transportation policy. |
This activity provides management, training and other related services, to personnel engaged, or employed, in the delivery of public transport services, including a school bus service. |
The works section of the Ministry is responsible for the following:

Maintaining the island’s public road system, to acceptable
standards |

Reducing
congestion and allowing for the more efficient movement of traffic |

Improving
accessibility to farming communities, to facilitate the efficient
transport of farm products |

Improving
drainage in the road network and implementing other flood control
measures, to protect lives and property, in the event of flooding |

Continuing
and strengthening the programme of bridge replacement and maintenance,
and introducing a new programme of bridge rehabilitation |
• |
Operating
an efficient equipment management scheme |
• |
Developing
and maintaining a national traffic management system |
• |
Transport
and Communication Services deals primarily with the management
of rail, road, marine and air transport. |
