Minister of Water and Housing, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, has urged Caribbean countries to urgently adopt a more integrated approach to development, with special attention to water and natural resource management.

"As the islands within the region struggle to deal with a myriad of socio-economic challenges, it is clear that we need to employ a more integrated approach to development, with special attention being paid to areas such as water and natural resources management, pollution control and energy efficiency," Dr. Chang said.

Minister of Water and Housing Dr. The Honourable Horace Chang, who is also the National Committee Chairman and Honorary President of the Caribbean Environmental Forum, addressing the opening ceremony of the Conference yesterday (June 21) at the Rose Hall Resort in Montego Bay.

As the National Committee Chairman and Honorary President of the Caribbean Environmental Forum (CEF-5), Dr. Chang was addressing participants in the Fifth biennial CEF and exhibition currently underway at the Rose Hall Resort in Montego Bay, St. James.

He was also direct in calling for greater collaboration among Caribbean Islands, through the sharing of information and experiences.

"In light of our limited resources, there is also a need to foster greater collaboration among the islands, especially through the sharing of information and experiences," he said.

He added that the importance of regional gatherings cannot be over emphasized, encouraging delegates to apply themselves to the discussions and the other activities that are planned.

Dr. Chang extended a warm welcome to over 500 participants at the conference, and expressed the hope that key environment issues and development will be discussed and experiences shared towards the cross-fertilisation of ideas.

The fifth biennial Caribbean Environmental Forum and Exhibition (CEF-5) being held in Montego Bay, June 21 to 25 has as its theme, 'Coping with Copenhagen: Water, Waste, Energy, Health'. It recognises the policy and political issues emanating from the Copenhagen Accord, and their consequences on some of the key environmental and sustainable development challenges facing the region.
